You haven’t truly experienced Lombok until you’ve tasted its fiery and flavorful cuisine. Lombok’s food is bold, spicy, and deeply rooted in tradition. Here are three dishes you cannot miss:
- Ayam Taliwang: This is Lombok’s most famous dish. It features a small, local free-range chicken, grilled to perfection and slathered in a spicy, savory chili sauce. It’s usually served with Plecing Kangkung.
- Sate Rembiga: Unlike the peanut-based satay found in Java, Sate Rembiga is made of tender beef marinated in a sweet and spicy spice blend. The result is a melt-in-your-mouth texture with a kick of heat.
- Plecing Kangkung: The secret is in the water spinach. Lombok’s Kangkung is grown in river water, making it much crunchier than elsewhere. It’s topped with a fresh tomato-chili sambal, lime, and fried peanuts.
Traveler’s Tip: If you’re not a fan of spicy food, always remember to say “Tidak pedas” (not spicy), but we highly recommend trying at least a little bit for the full experience!
